"I first became involved in the union during an organizing drive. At the time, we were working from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. to get eight hours of work, with no benefits and no milage.
"I became very active when our issues were not being addressed. A group of us showed up at a cross component committee (CCC) event and made our issues known.
"I have held a shop steward position to this day. I attend JLM (joint labour-management) meetings, a I am an alternate on our occupational health and safety committee. I have held the position of local chair since 807 was formed. Our area was the first pilot project to have community health workers (CHWs) work fixed hour positions. I am active on our CCC and on the local labour council.
"I am proud to be a BCGEU member and activist. I encourage everyone to get involved. Together, we can protect our members' rights and improve all workers' conditions. Please get involved, learn your rights under our contract, and help each other!"
