Health Science Professionals Enhanced Disability Management Program

August 12, 2014

The BCGEU has worked collaboratively with employers and with other unions in the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association (HSPBA) to develop the joint Enhanced Disability Management Program (EDMP).

EDMP is an employee centred disability management program which was negotiated into the HSPBA collective agreement in 2010. It was jointly developed and is administered by the employer and the union and the intent is to use a province-wide standardized approach to disability management.

EDMP provides early and appropriate on-going support to address medical, personal, workplace and vocational issues that create barriers to an employee's ability to stay at, or return to, work.

All regular employees are referred to the program on the first day of absence due to a workplace illness or injury, or after an absence of five consecutive shifts due to a non-work related illness or injury. Participation in this program is required for these employees.

Members may be referred to EDMP from a variety of sources including central call-in systems, managers, unions, WCB or LTD carriers. Regular and casual members may also self-refer to the program and these referrals will be considered on a case-by-case basis and participation is voluntary.

The EDMP will:

  • Promote safe, accessible and healthy workplaces;
  • Encourage health promotion and employee wellness;
  • Support employees who are struggling at work, and
  • Facilitate early intervention and rehabilitation to ensure employees remain on the job or have access to timely return-to-work programs.

If you are a member under the Health Science Professionals collective agreement and require support or information regarding EDMP, contact Laura Leadbetter-Fuoco, BCGEU HSPBA EDMP Representative at or 250-319-6391.
