The BCGEU's General Services Component includes members employed by casinos, hotels, banks, credit unions, B.C. Place, B.C. Housing Management, some Royal Canadian Legion operations, B.C. Milk Marketing Board, Compass Foods, regional districts plus private businesses. This is one of the union's fastest growing components.
Component 17 has been at the forefront of anti-bullying initiatives at the BCGEU. Our negotiators try to negotiate anti-bullying language into all our collective agreement. Some of our successes include anti-bullying language in BC Place (PAVCO) and Atira collective agreements.
In 2011, the component 17 raised public and BCGEU member awareness by launching its own Sea Of Pink campaign. It designed and distributed pink scarfs, stickers and pocket-sized information cards to educate members on ways to stand up against workplace bullying.
As a result of component 17's work, the BCGEU has broadened its anti-bullying efforts work by partnering with the CKNW Pink Shirt Day each February.
