Re:       Bargaining Resumes/Update

Your Bargaining Committee resumed collective agreement negotiations with your Employer on February 21st and 23rd. Talks were respectful, and your committee is pleased to report that significant progress was made on a number of non-monetary proposals.

Of significant importance, comprehensive language on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) was discussed fully and we are close to reaching agreement.  Worker safety is of paramount importance to the Union, and this new language will go a long way to ensuring that it remains so!

We have also made significant progress on a formal, detailed Grievance Procedure. Having a grievance procedure allows you as a BCGEU member, the opportunity to "file a grievance" against your Employer if any term or condition in the collective agreement has been violated. For example, if in you are not paid correctly, and the Employer refuses to correct the mistake, you can file a grievance, with the Union acting on your behalf to resolve the dispute. If it turned out the Employer did indeed owe you money, they would be legally bound to pay you back. Having a grievance procedure in place makes it safe for you to dispute violations with the full support of the Union.

Your Bargaining Committee is pleased to advise we have agreed to language on an Arbitration Procedure which provides for an independent settlement process when a grievance remains unresolved following the grievance procedure.  We have also agreed to language regarding New Job Codes/Classifications which provides a process for input by the Union on wage rates when the Employer establishes a new position.  Disagreements will be referred to the grievance/arbitration procedure for resolution.

Bargaining is set to resume again in April, with a number of dates scheduled through May. We will be sure to update you on those talks as well!
