Union and Ministry of Housing and Social Development agree on review of hours of work issues

February 10, 2009

To BCGEU members in Component 6, Ministry of Housing and Social Development

The BCGEU and the Ministry of Housing and Social Development are pleased to announce agreement on a process that will address hours of work issues specific to Component 6 staff in the Ministry of Housing and Social Development.

Ministry and union representatives met last week to discuss past history, outstanding grievances and current concerns about policy changes that took effect in most regions as of January 1, 2009.

On January 30, the parties together with the BC Public Service Agency agreed on some initial terms of reference that will guide the parties to determine the best possible outcome for members and the employer.

The parties agreed to engage in a review process that will offer options to members for the scheduling of leave time absences. A jointly-prepared question and answer information sheet will be prepared that addresses and answers all relevant questions and concerns.

The union obtained the agreement of the employer to suspend grievance time lines for the duration of the review process with respect to any issues resulting from the Ministry's hours of work policy changes that came into effect as of January 1, 2009.

The parties have agreed to meet again next month to review progress and to reach agreement on next steps. Details of that meeting and any agreements reached will be provided to members through another alert and regular union and employer updates.
