The Union and the Employer, with the assistance of Arbitrator Brian Foley, have reached a tentative settlement regarding a first collective agreement for the People's Law School.  This worksite was certified on December 1, 2010, and is assigned to Local 703.  The People's Law School provides access to legal information for diverse groups such as youth, students, adults, seniors, newcomers and others with distinctive needs.

Highlights of the tentative settlement are as follows:

  • 4% wage increase over two years. (1% as of September 1, 2011, 2% on April 1, 2012, and 1% on September 1, 2012)
  • Strong pro-active language regarding harassment and discrimination in the workplace
  • Establishment of a Labour/Management Committee to monitor and address issues such as workload and health and safety
  • Protection in the case of layoffs
  • Union observers on hiring panels
  • A clear grievance procedure, including opportunities for informal resolution
  • Enshrinement of benefits that existed before certification, such as vacation leave, bereavement leave, time off for medical appointments, and the Christmas/New Years shut down.

The Committee will be conducting a ratification vote in late September.
