Mainroad Bargaining Breaks Down

April 20, 2007

To:  All BCGEU Members at Mainroad South Island Contracting Ltd. Contract Area 01

The bargaining committee met with the Employer for 5 days of bargaining in the last 2 weeks and, while we have tentatively resolved a number of non-monetary issues, it is clear that the Parties are far apart on monetary issues and the term of the Collective Agreement.

The Employer has stated that they are seeking a seven (7) year Collective Agreement with total monetary compensation (wages, benefits, allowances) tied directly to the labour adjustment amount that the Employer receives from the Ministry of Transportation. The labour adjustment figure for 2007 is currently reported as 0.27%.

Your Bargaining Committee has decided we have no choice but to conduct a strike vote, which we will be doing early next week. We are seeking a strong strike mandate from the membership to ensure the Employer knows how serious this round of bargaining is to the members of Mainroad South Island Contracting Ltd. and to back up our demands at the bargaining table. Meetings will be held as follows:

DATE: Monday, April 23rd, 2007
TIME: Various
LOCATION: Gulf Islands

DATE: Tuesday, April 24th, 2007
TIME: 4:00 p.m.

DATE: Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

The Bargaining Committee will be contacting members located in Duncan and the Gulf Islands to make arrangements for voting. We ask that every member plan to attend the meeting(s) at the times noted above. Your Bargaining Committee will be present at the meetings to answer any questions.

Your Bargaining Committee appreciates the strong support you have voiced. Please arrange to attend this important meeting. You have to vote in person, no proxy votes are allowed.

In solidarity
