Your bargaining committee has been meeting with your employer since November 15. We have engaged in constructive discussion leading to agreement on a series of issues raised by both parties.
As we reported earlier, we were going to proceed through the non-monetary items first before we table the items that have a monetary cost to them.
When constructing monetary items to propose, your committee takes the time necessary to cost each one, and then all of them collectively, in order to be clear on what the actual cost will be. For example, health and welfare benefits have an hourly cost; wages have an hourly cost; any form of paid leave increase has an hourly cost. All monetary improvements are added to your hourly rate of pay.
The parties call these “real money” proposals.
As we mentioned in the previous bulletin, a challenge we cannot ignore relates to the negative impact on the employer’s business since the economic downturn in the fall of 2008 which impacted us with layoffs. Having said this, with a new owner, we remain cautiously optimistic for Agreement improvements.
We anticipate the completion of the non-monetary proposals soon and have constructed our monetary package for presentation to the employer. We are hopeful that once presented, we will be able to achieve the best Agreement possible to bring to the membership with a recommendation to ratify.
We are scheduled to meet with the employer through to December 3. As we continue negotiations, we will send out more bulletins to the worksites and the BCGEU website.
