BARGAINING COMMITTEE RECOMMENDING STRIKE VOTE
The BCGEU began negotiating with the B.C. Safety Authority in January 2012 to get a new collective agreement.
You identified your key issues: a fair and reasonable wage increase, better language for promoting and filling positions offering positions first to in-service staff and some enhancements to benefits and allowances. We brought fair and reasonable proposals to the negotiating table and have resolved some non-monetary issues, including: streamlining the grievance procedure; adding no bullying to the harassment language; introduction of a joint Rehabilitation Committee process.
In response to our monetary package, tabled on March 5th, the employer presented a Framework for Settlement which provided a woeful 1% and 1.5% wage increase and little more in any other area.
During the latter part of March, we held membership meetings to consult and seek your input. We returned to the table on May 8th, reaffirming our position, and the employer advised they were unwilling to significantly improve their offer.
Additionally, the employer has no interest in changing their current hiring practices; they continue to demand that all new classifications over grid 18 with direct reports will be excluded; and they continue to demand that you limit your prime time vacation scheduling from 4 weeks to 3 weeks.
Talks broke off on May 8th, 2012. The Committee needs your strong support in order to return to the table and negotiate a fair and reasonable settlement. The BCGEU is now conducting a strike vote and your Bargaining Committee is urging you to vote yes. Details regarding voting will be communicated to you shortly.
